W87 warhead

-The W87 as mounted in the V2's re-entry vehicle.

Origin: (Real World)
United States of America

Games Featured In:
Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War

Operators:
Belkan military
Osean military
Yuktobanian military

Overview:

The W87 is a warhead designed as part of the newest missile warhead family, sharing a design similar to the W88. It was designed for use on the Peacekeeper (MX) ICBM. It combines a relatively high yield with increased accuracy to make it an effective hard target kill weapon. It is hardened against nuclear effects, and has enhanced safety features.

The original yield of the W87 was 300 kilotons of TNT, but has the announced ability to be upgraded to a yield of 475 kilotons, presumably by using more enriched uranium in the fusion secondary stage tamper. It is not known if that upgrade was completely tested or merely designed and ready to implement.

It makes its appearance in the Ace Combat universe as the individual warheads that the V2 Mass Retaliation Weapon uses. It should be noted that it has a different arrangement than its real-life counterpart, with the warhead itself being of a cylindrical shape, instead of a conical one. The re-entry vehicle of the W87 used in the V2 is also significantly larger and posseses a variety of sensors in the nose. It should also be noted that the neutron generator is in front of the W87 assembly, and not in the back.

According to reports, the gun was "capable of stunning men and animals at (a) one mile range," though this generally involved the inventor firing the gun from a catapult.
